Profiling the Overhead Athlete

Graeme Lehman

Graeme Lehman, MSc, CSCS, is a S&C coach with over 20 years of experience working with athletes ranging from youth to Olympic and professional levels. He specializes in baseball pitching, having worked with hundreds of pitchers both in person and remotely, including consulting roles with MLB and NJCAA programs. Based in southeastern British Columbia, Graeme works with hockey and volleyball organizations, including the Cranbrook Bucks (BCHL) and the College of the Rockies women’s volleyball (PacWest). He is also NCCP-certified in tennis, volleyball, soccer, and baseball.

Training the High-Performance Para Athlete: Practical Insights into the Five Core Competencies

Anna Aylwin & Bryan Yu

Anna Aylwin is CSI Alberta’s first female Lead of the Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Team and currently the only active female Lead S&C in the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network. She holds a master’s degree in high performance physiology and has been in the field of S&C for over 25 years. Over the past 15 years with the Institute, Anna has worked with multiple NSOs in Olympic and paralympic sport including Cross country skiing, biathlon, triathlon, swimming, diving and cycling with expertise lying in S&C for endurance and aesthetic sports. She has been the lead S&C advisor for Skate Canada since 2017, S&C coach for the Canadian Paranordic Ski Team since 2016.

Bryan Yu completed his Master of Science in Biomechanics at the University of Calgary in 2023 under the supervision of Dr. Walter Herzog. His research examined muscle operating lengths in speed skaters during the turn-cable exercise. Since 2014, he has worked at the Canadian Sport Institute Alberta, supporting national and development teams across Olympic and Paralympic sports. He currently serves as the lead strength and conditioning coach for the Canadian Men’s National Para Hockey and Sitting Volleyball Teams. He also coordinates the Strength and Power Lab, overseeing athlete testing to monitor readiness and guide return-to-performance strategies.

Reverse Engineering from the Olympics to Grass Roots Sports

Jeremiah Barnert

Jeremiah completed his BSc from the UofC and his MSc in S&C from ECU in Perth, Australia. Jeremiah is the Integrated Support Team lead for Ski Cross Canada, Women’s Fencing and 3×3 Basketball. He was a support team member at the 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2026 Olympic Games. He has worked with many Olympic, World Championship and World Cup champions and medallists. His expertise includes speed and power development, athlete monitoring and return to sport.

Rethinking Hormones and Symptom Management in Female Athletes

Danica Vangsgaard

Danica is a Strength & Conditioning Coach with the Canadian Sport Institute Alberta, working primarily with long track speed skating and ringette athletes. She is also pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Calgary, where her research focuses on hormone response to exercise in female athletes, with a special interest in the effects of aging and menopause on endurance performance.

Beyond return-to-sport: Using the neuromuscular envelope of function to assess return-to-performance readiness after ACL injury.

Zachary McClean

Zachary McClean is completing his PhD in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, where his research sits at the intersection of applied biomechanics, athlete profiling, and data-driven decision-making in sport. He also holds strength and conditioning and sport science consulting roles in the NHL and NFL. Zach’s work focuses on translating athlete monitoring data into actionable insights for practitioners seeking to optimize athletic performance and return-to-performance outcomes following injury. A central thread of his research involves adapting machine learning methods from adjacent disciplines to simplify the interpretation of datasets with many metrics, particularly those derived from force plate testing, and to support more

informed, individualized training decisions in applied settings. His current research focuses on developing profiling frameworks to evaluate return-to-performance readiness following ACL injury.
