Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Making the most of the offseason whether you see them or not

Cole Hergott

Cole Hergott is the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Trinity Western University Spartans in Langley, British Columbia. Previously he held a graduate assistant position at The University of British Columbia where he received his Masters degree in Coaching Science. Cole has done work at almost all levels of sports including stints as an intern in pro, national, high school, and general fitness environments.

Along with his Masters degree, Cole has certifications as a Strength & Conditioning Coach (CSCS, RSCC, aISCP), Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT), Sport Scientist (CPSS), Nutrition Coach (Pn1), Movement Coach (FMS-2), and Kinesiologist (BCAK).

At TWU, where Cole began working in the spring of 2019, he operates as a one-man-show and coaches 300 athletes in a 1000 square foot old classroom and has found many ways to keep things flowing efficiently and effectively which has allowed Spartans to punch above their belt.

Tanner Care

Tanner Care is a performance coach, consultant, and educator with extensive experience in both professional and collegiate sport. He currently serves as the Director of Player Performance for the BC Lions in the CFL and the Vancouver Bandits in the CEBL. Tanner has delivered presentations for the NSCA, Hawkin Dynamics, and the CSCA, sharing his knowledge on performance training. He also contributes as an author for Simplifaster, providing practical insights for coaches and athletes. His work focuses on enhancing player development through evidence-based methods.”

Building Better Warmups: Prepare athletes and develop long term abilities

Tom Ryan

Tom is currently a Physical Preparation Coach with Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS and has a role as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Staffordshire in the UK. He is NSCA CSCS certified and holds accredited and chartered scientist status through the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Science (CASES, formerly BASES) and the Science Council, respectively. He achieved a Masters degree by research in Sport and Exercise from the University of Derby and an undergraduate award in Strength & Conditioning from the University of Staffordshire, both in the UK.

Insights into Parasport Training: When the basics apply and when to get creative

Matt Fliss

Matt is a current PhD candidate at UBC under the supervision of Dr. Cameron Mitchell. His work aims to broadly explore when resistance becomes endurance exercise with specific interest in how contraction intensity of a muscle may impact its own intramuscular vasculature via occlusion or compression. Matt also works as a sessional instructor and teaching assistant at UBC with a focus on courses pertaining to exercise physiology, exercise testing/prescription, and coaching skills.

In tandem with his academic focus Matt has worked as a student strength & conditioning intern with McMaster Performance (2016-2019) and graduate assistant strength & conditioning coach with UBC Performance (2019-present). Over this time, he’s had the pleasure of working under and alongside exceptional Canadian S&C coaches and with a variety of varsity sports programs.

Since 2022, Matt has been contracted with Cycling Canada to be the strength & conditioning coach for Nathan Clement, a Vancouver based para-cyclist. In this time, Nate has become a three-time world champion and earned a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic games.

Late Stage ACL Rehab: A job for the S&C

Carmen Bott

Carmen Bott holds a Masters of Science in Kinesiology & is both a practicing Kinesiologist & Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Under the supervision of Dr. Jack Taunton in Sports Medicine at The University of British Columbia, her research focused on load monitoring and key physical performance indicators in university level basketball athletes. The team Carmen was part of while at UBC was inducted into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame.

Carmen has evolved into an International Educator. She is sought after for her methodology & coaching tactics in the preparation of Multi-directional Team Sport Athletes. This includes her renowned expertise in creating a comprehensive approach to ACL Rehab for some of the most rigorous sports. She has also recently completed the Unbeatable Mind certificate program which rounds out her skill set as a Mental Performance Coach.

Carmen is also a Lecturer at Simon Fraser University. Her main interest lies in teaching applied kinesiology, and she engages her students in the following courses:

  • BPK 143 – Exercise: Health and Performance
  • BPK 343 – Assessment and Exercise Prescription
  • BPK 375 – Growth and Motor Development

As a Physical Performance Coach, Carmen has 28 years of hands-on experience from the learn-to-train level to the High Performance & professional level. Give her a puzzle and watch the problem-solving unfold. She has returned many athletes to sport after injury and helped many achieve their sporting goals. As a Mental Performance Coach, Carmen helps athletes become more self-aware and find ways to navigate high-pressure environments.

Carmen is forever curious about the potential of the human form and mind and has boundless energy to help athletes and students achieve their goals.

Optimizing Linear Speed Development in Action

Derrick Jeyakumaran

Derrick currently works as a sports performance coach at Simon Fraser University and a strength and conditioning coach at the Richmond Olympic Oval that leads a variety of groups. Derrick has multiple years of experience working as a lead coach in the private sector and collegiate setting, working with a variety of youth, varsity, and professional athletes. Derrick is passionate about providing education to others based on his own experiences and coaching education. As a younger coach in the strength and conditioning industry, Derrick hopes to help play a pivotal role in shaping the S&C landscape in Canada.

The Art of Developing Coaches and Athletes

Joseph McCullum

Joe began his career coaching wrestling, rugby and football as soon as he graduated high school. Upon graduating from the University of Utah in 1999 he began working with their strength and conditioning team. His primary role was with Football and Men’s and Women’s Basketball but assisted with the other 13 teams as needed.

He moved back to Canada in 2002 and began working with Level 10 Fitness inc. in North Vancouver. In his 12 years with Level Ten Fitness, he worked and traveled the world with countless national teams and athletes including U20 Rugby, Sailing, Wrestling and close to everything in between. His role at Level 10 also included managing a team of over 30 including: personal trainers, therapists, strength and conditioning coaches and front desk staff. He has coached multiple world and Olympic medalists in many different sports as well as many professional athletes ranging from the NHL to NFL.

In September 2014 Joe took on the role of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University of British Columbia where he is responsible for 26 teams, over 650 athletes and a group of undergraduate and graduate student coaches working towards their studies while garnering practical experience in the varsity weight room. Joe is also a sessional lecturer within the School of Kinesiology at UBC, is a current advisory board and former board member of the CSCA.
