The Canadian Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCA) is pleased to announce another important milestone in the rollout of the Canadian Strength and Conditioning Professional (CSCP) certification pathway, and a newly developed Mentorship Program. Along with the continued roll out of the CSCP, a defined Scope of Practice for Strength and Conditioning coaches within Canada has been established.
The CSCP Level 1 and CSCP Level 2 certification pathways are now live on the CSCA website, providing members with access to the certification requirements, application processes, and a suite of new resources that support the development and assessment of Canadian Strength and Conditioning Professionals. Click here to learn more about the CSCP certification pathway.
Introducing the CSCA Scope of Practice
As part of the continued rollout of the CSCP certification pathway, the CSCA in partnership with Sport Scientist Canada, has also published the Scope of Practice for Strength and Conditioning Coaches.
The Scope of Practice establishes a nationally aligned framework that defines the role of the S&C coach within the Canadian sport system. It outlines the professional responsibilities, expected competencies, and boundaries of practice that underpin safe, ethical, and evidence-informed S&C practice.
The document complements the CSCP certification pathway by providing greater clarity around the expectations of certified strength and conditioning professionals. These expectations are embedded throughout the certification pathway, including the Mentorship Framework and Competency Review Framework.
Together, these resources help establish a shared understanding of the role of the strength and conditioning coach while providing greater clarity for practitioners, employers, sport organizations, educational institutions, and integrated support teams regarding the expectations of CSCP-certified professionals.
CSCP Level 1 and Level 2 Applications Are Now Live
The CSCA website now provides members with detailed information regarding the
CSCP Level 1 and CSCP Level 2 certification pathways, including eligibility requirements, application procedures, supporting documentation, and assessment processes.
Alongside the certification requirements, the website now includes several key resources that collectively define and support the standards expected of Canadian Strength and Conditioning Professionals.
Competency Review Framework
The Competency Review Framework provides transparency around how applicants demonstrate the competencies required of a Canadian Strength and Conditioning Professional. Rather than focusing solely on academic knowledge, the framework evaluates an applicant's ability to apply evidence-informed practice across the breadth of professional strength and conditioning.
Applicants are assessed across core competency domains including professionalism and leadership, communication, testing and monitoring, technical coaching proficiency, programming and planning, professional conduct, ethical practice, Safe Sport, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an understanding of professional scope of practice.
Together, the Scope of Practice, Mentorship Framework, and Competency Review Framework define, develop, and assess the competencies expected of CSCP-certified professionals.
Legacy Distinction Pathway Now Closed
The CSCA has now officially concluded the Legacy Distinction application process.
The Legacy Distinction pathway was established to recognize experienced strength and conditioning (S&C) professionals who had made significant contributions to the profession prior to the introduction of the new CSCP certification framework.
We would like to sincerely thank every member who invested the time and effort required to prepare and submit an application. The response from the Canadian strength and conditioning community was exceptional, with more than 100 members successfully achieving Legacy Distinction status.
Your commitment to the profession and willingness to participate in this important initiative have helped establish a strong foundation for the future of S&C certification in Canada.
Legacy Distinction Holders Transition to CSCP Level 2
Members who successfully achieved Legacy Distinction status have now been automatically recognized as Canadian Strength and Conditioning Professional Level 2 (CSCP2).
This transition acknowledges the experience, leadership, and professional competencies demonstrated through the Legacy Distinction review process while aligning these members within the new national certification framework. No further application is required.
Supporting the Future of the Profession
The launch of the CSCP Level 1 and Level 2 pathways represents another significant step in strengthening and advancing the S&C profession in Canada.
By combining a clearly defined Scope of Practice with structured mentorship and transparent competency assessment, the CSCA continues to strengthen the profession while supporting the development of competent, ethical, and evidence-informed strength and conditioning professionals throughout every stage of their careers.
Together, these resources represent an important step in the continued evolution of the CSCP certification pathway, providing members with greater transparency around the standards, expectations, and professional development opportunities available through the CSCA.
We encourage all members to visit the certification section of the CSCA website to explore the new resources, review the certification requirements, and determine the next step in their professional development journey.
